hydrosolutions GmbH participated in a workshop on hydrological monitoring at the Rift Valley Lakes Basin Development Office in Hawassa, Ethiopia. Hydrological monitoring is crucial for sound and sustainable water resources management – more so in the Sahelian semi-arid Ziway-Shala Basin, where combined effects of population growth, agricultural expansion and climate change are threatening natural resources and eventually the local population, highly dependent on agricultural income. The dramatic shrinking of Lake Abijata from a surface area of 160 square kilometers in 2000 to a dry season minimum of 55 square kilometers in 2019 is the most obvious symptom of recent natural and unsustainable anthropogenic developments in the catchment.
The workshop included two days of testing the different methods on the field and setting up a demonstration site for optical flow measurement using the discharge.ch application.
