Advancing Flood Resilience in Nepal: hydrosolutions Back from Project Scoping Visit

The hydrosolutions team recently returned from a successful visit to Nepal under SDC Nepal’s Regional Climate Action Partnership in the Hindu Kush Himalayas (ReCAP). The Swiss Consortium of ReCAP—formed by hydrosolutions GmbH, the University of Geneva, the University of Zurich, Tribhuvan University, and Practical Action—aims to significantly contribute to the larger ADB-led Building Adaptation and Resilience in the Hindu Kush Himalayas (BARHKH) project. The visit brought together the consortium partners to advance multi-hazard risk assessment and early warning capacities in Nepal.

As part of this work, in close collaboration with Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), hydrosolutions GmbH is developing the flood forecasting component of the country’s future multi-hazard early warning system. In dedicated technical sessions at DHM, we discussed system requirements, operational workflows, and the design of the future forecasting system.

The visit marked an important step in preparing the ground for the deployment of hydrosolutions’ deep learning–based streamflow forecasting technology. This will be supported by the deployment of our SnowMapper system to Nepal, which will generate high-resolution snowpack and snowmelt inputs essential for accurate forecasting. hydrosolutions will additionally contribute to flood hazard mapping in Nepal, explicitly considering climate change impacts. This work builds on our expertise in flood modeling in data-scarce mountain regions and our research on how climate change alters flood magnitudes and frequencies.

During a field visit to Nakhu River, our team observed how dramatically the river’s fluvial morphology has shifted following the 2024 flood event—an urgent reminder of how extreme events are reshaping landscapes and risk profiles.

We look forward to continuing this collaboration and to bringing cutting-edge, operational deep learning–based flood forecasting to Nepal—combining Swiss innovation with local expertise to strengthen resilience in one of the world’s most hazard-exposed mountain regions.
